Whodunits are few and far between nowadays. But, the genre is alive and well in terms of quality. There are so many amazing modern whodunits. I went to Rian Johnson’s Knives Out with some pretty high expectations to be honest. I love whodunits and I was so excited watching the trailers.
I’ll jump straight into it; Knives Out completely exceeded these expectations. I went multiple times in theaters and have watched it multiple times since then. In fact, I recently got a 4K Bluray player and Knives Out was the first 4K Bluray I bought. It is a fantastic movie.
Like every amazing whodunit, Knives Out has a seemingly simple story in the forefront; the death of an extremely well-off novelist, Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), is killed during a family party at his estate. All of his children are set to profit from his death. We later find out that all of them were being cut out of his life one-by-one. So with everything to lose and everything to gain, who was the killer? This becomes only more of a mystery when Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is hired anonymously to solve the murder. But, interestingly, you learn how Harlan Thrombey actually died in the first half of the movie. The rest of the movie is twists and turns as to what is really going on in the house.
It works perfectly.
The original setup of Thrombey’s death is intriguing and the twists the movie takes from there are somehow better. I love Knives Out through and through. All the children of Thrombey are wonderfully cast and wonderfully written. There really is not much wrong with this movie to be honest. This movie is rewatchable to the max and I have yet to have a boring watch-through. I honestly would say this is one of the best movies of 2019. Please just watch it.
Knives Out gets a 3.5 out of 4. I hesitate giving it a perfect score only because I feel that some of the stories could be flushed out a little more. We learn so much about a couple characters, but some of the others sort of feel like they are there only to muddy the water. Not saying that the characters were pointless, just that I wish I could see more of them. But to be honest, I would watch a six hour director’s cut that flushes all of that out. So, I guess the true complaint is that this movie isn’t longer. I love Knives Out and you will too. Just watch the damn film. Beware emetophobes, however, there is a character that pukes when she lies. Including puking right on someone’s face.
