Alright, let’s get the obvious out of the way: Nobody is an homage to John Wick. Which, for me, is not a bad thing. I love all the John Wick films a lot. So, I was excited to see a John Wick starring my boy, Bob Odenkirk. Let me give a spoiler; I was not disappointed.
Essentially, Nobody asks the question, “what would John Wick be if John Wick’s wife and family were never killed?” “What if he grew up and became a family man?” Much as he intended to do before the first John Wick movie. Nobody takes this premise and runs with it. Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) is a family man with two kids and a lovely wife. He works a simple desk job and we see two weeks of his life blend together in the beginning of the film. But, one night, a pair of burglars enter his house to rob him blind. Or, steal eleven dollars… Which is all Hutch has in his house because, to quote the movie, he “uses a debit card.” But the burglars make one fatal mistake. They steal Hutch’s watch and, more importantly, his daughter’s kitty cat bracelet. This brings out a part of Hutch long dormant. Hutch unleashes his trained hitman, stab a man in the throat and give him a makeshift tracheotomy with a soda straw, side. All over a couple pieces of wrist-wear.
Obviously there is a lot more to Nobody, but this sets off the whole plot of the movie. Hutch finds himself wrapped up in a group of some bad bad people. Or rather, those bad people find themselves wrapped up with Hutch. The movie truly takes off and has some brutal, beautiful scenes. Similarly to John Wick, Nobody has wonderfully choreographed fights and plenty of violent takedowns. If you like John Wick, you’ll like Nobody.
Now a couple things that really sell Nobody for me. First, I loved the world building in the original John Wick. It’s a world of assassins with a whole set of laws and regulations. But, the movie trusts the viewer to find all this out. You are dropped into a world without any explanation. You’re sort of just left to your own to discover this world and how it works. I loved that in the original John Wick. The sequels all explain the world a little more, but they end up explaining too much and not leaving the wonderful mystery of the world. Nobody does the exact same thing as the first John Wick. I loved that they did this. They completely trust you, as the viewer, to figure out the type of world Hutch lives in. At one point a guy notices Hutch’s playing card tattoo and says, “thank you for your service.” It never explains this and never touches it again. Hutch obviously has a past that we don’t get to see. It’s wonderful! In fact, Hutch tries multiple times to exposition dump to dying bad guys, but he never gets to actually say anything because they die too fast. It’s amazing. There is a whole world here and it’s all for you to discover. Not to mention that Hutch’s family (maybe his family? It really doesn’t flesh this out even) all know, and participate in Hutch’s business. I just love when movies do this. It makes me want to know more about the world and really leaves stuff to discover. I love it.
Nobody is a wonderful John Wick clone and was a pleasure to watch. In fact, I think it might be better than John Wick 2 and John Wick 3. Simply for the shroud of mystery it holds. I so want this to become a long running franchise. I’ll take four more Nobody movies please. Not to mention that Bob Odenkirk is amazing in this (but that’s no surprise). I truly loved this movie and I think you will too. I’ll for sure be checking out this one again and any sequels they release.
I give Nobody a 3.5 out of 4. It is excellently paced. It is laugh out loud funny at times. It is action packed. It is violent, brutal, and most importantly, believable in its action. I truly enjoyed it through and through. Also, it did something I was extremely proud of the writers for doing; it broke the trope of having the wife and family abandon Hutch in a time of need. Usually they would ask a million questions and not trust him and leave him. Only to predictably come back at the end. But Nobody sort of ditches all of this and has his family completely trust him and leave when he asks them to leave. They listen to him and stay safe because of it. His wife even helps him clean some stab wounds with zero questions asked. It’s such a breath of fresh air to see something different than the unapproving wife. I really appreciated this detail.
Go watch this movie please. Let’s get a sequel.
